Update on Extreme Intercropping: Peppers and Lettuce in a Vineyard

    September 25, 2023

In May I wrote about my trial of extreme intercropping of peppers and lettuce in a vineyard. The lettuce did well. And bolted in June, leaving the peppers to be the dominate under vine canopy vegetable. The peppers also have done very well. as the below photos attest.

These peppers are Hungarian Dracula mild hot peppers and Hungarian Kecskeszarv mild peppers

  • Vegetable Stew Fully (Almost) From The Garden

Vegetable Stew Fully (Almost) From The Garden

    August 12, 2023

A vegetable stew I recently made from vegetables from my garden. I could have made it fully from the garden, but I decided to splurge a bit and added some extra items. Below is a chart of each item and its source.

Do note: The “Not From the Garden” items were not actually necessary. So this stew can be fully made from anyone’s garden if they wish. Recommend substituting any other bean you have grown for the Chickpeas.

Extreme Intercropping: Cabbage in a Vineyard

    July 15, 2023

Extending my extreme intercropping experiments this year. And this is cabbage in a vineyard. The cabbage did very well. But i have to admit it did better in those areas where we lost vines and the cabbage had more light. But still overall, i will call this a success.

Extreme Intercropping: Peppers and Lettuce in a Vineyard

    May 18, 2023

This is a no dig bed. Laid down under a vineyard row. Late season lettuce and peppers. I am curious how it goes. The lettuce will crop in the next 6 weeks, but the peppers should last all summer.

    Extreme Intercropping: Garlic and Tomatoes

    May 14, 2023

Planting tomatoes between my garlic. Good companion plants. And by the time the garlic is harvested, the tomatoes should be ready to bear fruit. The garlic does not hinder light to the tomatoes. And intercropping maximizes land use in both time and space.

    The Frustrated Snail

    March 27, 2023

Rather than use chemicals, I have been putting up physical barriers to stop pests eating the plants in my starting areas and in my garden. Mesh netting is a primary pest solution. Netting helps to keep off a lot of pests.

But today I actually felt sorry for a snail. So much snail food. So close, beyond the mesh. Poor little guy…. 😦

Spring Gift: Morel Mushrooms in the Garden

    March 26, 2023

This week, when laying back fleece on some lettuce, on a no dig section of my garden, I was greeted with a wonderful garden gift. Morel mushrooms amongst my lettuce. It was a good day. Garden gold. I picked some, but let others to grow more to be picked later. All picked were dried for later use.

    Enjoy the pictures.
