As I already have written, I often use old egg cartons for starter trays. Lettuce does very well in egg cartons. And a week ago I started planting out my egg carton lettuce. Roman lettuce is shown in the photos below. After planting, I cover them with fleece. It helps to warm them in early spring, and keeps many (but not all) pests away.
