I stained and painted some old wine barrels for decorative garden elements around our house. This year a chickadee (also known as a tit in Europe) apparently discovered that the barrel bunghole was just about the perfect size to enter, and so has started to build a nest inside the barrel. We are apparently soon to be the proud parents of another batch of small birds. Old wine barrels have all sorts of uses; apparently even some I did not anticipate, but of which I am still pleased.
