My last post was a question. Was it too late to plant Autumn salad. The simple and direct answer is: No. My salad grew well.

But that did not mean there were not “issues”.

Sadly, my main issue was not weather but deer. Just before the first harvest, all my lettuce plants were eaten to the ground by deer. Which annoying put off my first salad by almost a month.

I put the lettuce rows under low tunnels to prevent deer depredation more than for weather (but the tunnels will help extend the salad season so it was a dual purpose decision).

The up side was the lettuce grew very well in the low tunnels.

But the down side was, so did the weeds….

But, in the end, I am still now able to harvest a good salad every other day, which is good enough for the month of November.
