    No Bees But Some Almonds

I did not see bees when our almond trees bloomed early this year. But apparently, and despite that, some flowers were pollinated since we do have some almonds growing. However, it is less than a normal sized crop.

    Frost Damage

We had freezing weather last night. It is nearly May, and this is the first time I have seen such low temperatures in our vineyard at this time of year. And we had some minor frost damage as a result. The most damage occurred on newly planted young vines and…

Grafting Old Wine With a Modified Cleft Graft

As I have mentioned before, we have a number of different wine varieties in one vineyard. Some of these varieties are not of sufficient number to make varietal wine, so I am in the process of consolidating and removing these varieties from this vineyard. The most economical means of doing…

    A Wine Barrel Bird House

I stained and painted some old wine barrels for decorative garden elements around our house. This year a chickadee (also known as a tit in Europe) apparently discovered that the barrel bunghole was just about the perfect size to enter, and so has started to build a nest inside the…

    Almond Flowers, But No Bees

Our almond trees are blooming now, in February. A bit early. But of more concern, I also noticed there is not the typical hum of bees I normally hear around the almond trees when they bloom. It is still too cold and too wet for bees. And without bees to…

    Farmers Markets -vs- Supermarkets

Interesting discussion about food shopping at the expat.com forum. My view on one side topic in the forum, regarding farmers markets versus supermarkets:
